We did not find better than a pretty bouquet of roses to embellish the decor ... provided that it lasts more than two days without fading. To avoid ending with a bouquet of dried flowers in the vase, we make our favorite bouquets last as long as possible with professional tips!
A bouquet of roses without water will not last long, not even to please us. Whether the flowers come from the garden or from the florist, there is no question of making them wait! They are immersed in water as quickly as possible and, failing that, they are sheltered from the sun and heat. For transportation, wrap the stems with paper towel soaked in water and then aluminum foil to prevent leakage.
Cut the stems
The first secret of long-lasting bouquets of roses? Well cut stems. Cut at a 45 ° bevel, they absorb water better, are therefore better nourished and fade later. Ideally, cut them under a stream of water, with a good pruner, not a pair of scissors. And to keep the flowers as long as possible, cut them if possible every day to maintain their absorption capacity at the top.
Choose the right vase
A vase ill-suited to the bouquet of roses, and the whole decorative effect flies away. Not only are the flowers likely to be crooked, but the stems may be poorly submerged. The result is a bouquet that fades before the hour. To choose the right vase, take into account the length of the stems: the flowers and leaves must reach the edge of the vase, and the stems must be two-thirds immersed. The width or diameter must be sufficient to accommodate the stems without crushing them. Last detail, we make sure that the vase is perfectly clean to avoid bacteria that could contaminate the water!
Peel the leaves
Once the stems of the bouquet have been cut, we move on to the second step: peeling them. The leaves in contact with the water in the vase eventually rot and contaminate the water. Roses absorb water, they absorb bacteria in the process, which shortens their lifespan. We therefore simply cut the leaves, until the submerged part of the stems is bare.
Prepare the water
Water feeds flowers, why not boost them to make them last? There are preservatives for cut flowers, in the form of sachets to be poured into water. Many florists or websites also supply them with bouquets. Otherwise, we put on simple, ecological and economical homemade solutions: a tablespoon of white vinegar and two of powdered sugar in the water of the vase. Or instead, a spoon of baking soda, a coin, a pill of aspirin ... or even a drop or two of bleach, it seems, to kill bacteria. And we fill the vase two-thirds, roses love large volumes!
Monitor the temperature
With or without water, bouquets of roses appreciate the sun only moderately and not at all the heat. They are kept away from direct light, both natural and electric, in a warm room and away from the radiator. An other idea ? Put the flowers in the refrigerator or in an unheated room to give them pep's overnight, they will all be frisky in the morning. Be careful, in passing, to move away the fruit cuts which can accelerate the aging of the flowers.
Take care of the water
The last tip is also the simplest: change the water in the vase very regularly. Every two days, ideally, adding a piece of charcoal to the bottom to keep it from languishing. Always fresh, the water provides maximum nutrients to the roses and allows them to stay longer in the living room!
