How to choose a smoothie blender?

How to choose a smoothie blender?

The blender, an essential accessory in the kitchen

The blender - not to be confused with the juice extractor or the centrifuge! - used to mix food.

A blender isn't just for making smoothies. It can also be used to prepare milkshakes, fruit coulis, cocktails ... Some models of blenders are also heated, and thus make homemade soups. For smoothie addicts, there are even super-blenders, which are even more powerful for blending even more foods.

As with any purchase of household appliances, there are criteria to take into account before falling for a model of smoothie blender. Not all models are created equal, and some even offer features that you may not need.

Bowl capacity

The capacity of the blender bowl is very important. This lets you know the approximate number of glasses of smoothie you can make at one time. You must therefore ensure that the capacity of the bowl allows you to prepare enough smoothie, mash or other soup for the whole family.

If you are alone or as a couple, a more compact blender will be more than enough to meet your expectations.

In the trade, one generally finds blenders with bowls having a capacity of 0.8 to 2 liters. On average, most smoothie blenders offers a capacity of 1.5L.

Engine power

Another very important criterion when choosing his smoothie blender : engine power. This is what will differentiate a good model from a much less satisfactory model.

Standard blenders generally have 2 speeds. High-end models tend to offer more speed options, depending on the preparation desired.

Go below 200 watts. It will be difficult to mix fruit and vegetables properly, or to make crushed ice. A blender starts to perform with a 200 to 500 watt motor.

Above 500 watts, the blender offers better power and can crush ice. Convenient for the preparation of your cocktails and other granites! The more you increase in power, the more your device can mix large quantities of ingredients. It can also mix and mix thicker preparations, without damaging the engine of the device.

If you want a powerful model that allows you to mix dried fruit (nuts, almonds, etc.) or even meat, then choose a blender model offering a power of about 1000 watts. We then approach the food processor.

The ergonomics and materials of the smoothie blender

So that it stays perfectly in place when the food is being mixed, the blender must be quite heavy. At least, the base of the device. The cover of the smoothie blender should not be complicated to remove, otherwise you will end up with stains of mixed fruit on the walls or the worktop!

Models with an opening cap on the lid are very handy, if you need to add food or liquid during the preparation of your smoothie, soup or milkshake. This avoids having to switch off the appliance, open the bowl and switch the appliance on again.

Blender bowls are usually made of glass or plastic. Glass bowls are recommended, even if they are heavier than plastic ones. The thick glass is resistant to shocks as well as to temperature differences (especially if you opt for a heated blender).

Plastic bowls are necessarily cheaper, but they last much less over time. They are difficult to clean because certain foods can stain (beets, carrots, tomatoes, raspberries, etc.).

The options

Often gadgets, sometimes useful, options can also influence your purchasing act. Some smoothie blenders offer a "Pulse" function. It allows you to launch the device immediately at high speed, to mix food faster.

Some models also offer options for crushing ice, making smoothies, compote or hot preparations (soups, sauces, etc.).
