Laying grass in rolls is easy!

Grass rolls can be laid all year round except during frost or heat waves… First, check the weather, and place your order with a producer of lawns and slabs, or even in a garden center, about a week before the scheduled day of installation. There are different categories of ready-to-use lawns (shade lawns, lawns for large areas, etc.), but opt for the most classic mixture offered by your specialist: depending on whether you live in the north or the south of France , a mixture of English ryegrass, Kentucky bluegrass and red or tall fescue offers good resistance to trampling. It is an adult lawn, cultivated in the rules of the art in the nursery or in the open field for 12 months, without unwanted weeds, fertilized, nourished. And for the price, count 4 to 8 € / m2 including VAT and delivered, but this range is variable according to the regions. You just need to check with the chosen local company.

Ready-to-install grass: do not overlook the preparation of the ground

While waiting for your ready-to-install turf to be delivered to you, prepare your site as for a conventional sowing: clean it (stones, weeds, small waste, etc.) on 10 to 15 cm. If the soil is too heavy, amend it with lighter soil or with sand. Optionally incorporate 10 cm compost (not on the surface), or even an organo-mineral fertilizer if you prefer - only on poor soil. Be careful in this case, if you spread it, make sure that the granules are buried and not visible to lay the lawn, so as not to burn the roots. Then pass the rake and the roller to obtain a stable and flat ground. If the soil is already flat and clean, but your lawn is existing and needs to be replaced, a simple very level cut and cross scarification can be sufficient preparation of the ground before laying.

Don't miss the timing when laying your lawn

The truck honks and parks in front of your home: a great start for installation, in a few hours, your garden will be brand new! But before rushing and unloading, as with any reception, make an applied check on the state of your ready-to-install turf on arrival, especially if it is hot. Check its sanitary quality. Does it have a particular smell? Was it properly mowed before being moved? Do not hesitate to refuse delivery in case of doubt, at the risk of laying a lawn that will die ... And if the lawn is of good quality, lay it down the same day imperatively: count about 10 m2 / hour approximately - of course, the laying rhythm also depends on the access between the delivery location and the garden, a detail to take into account.

Ready-to-install turf: don't ignore the methodology

It is possible to lay your lawn alone (although of course it is faster and fun for many). A roller holds in the hands, corresponds to an area of 1 m2 and weighs 18 to 20 kg. On a damp but not soggy ground, unroll it in staggered rows. The plates should be offset and tightened to each other as much as possible, cut with a large knife if necessary. Note: most companies give installation instructions, do not hesitate to ask for them. At this stage, the roots make contact with the earth.

Once your lawn in rolls laid, do not forget to water abundantly

Watering is fundamental to keeping a beautiful lawn. During the first 10 to 15 days after installation, it must be copious and will then adapt to the specifics of each season. After two weeks of this good treatment, the patches of grass will be completely integral with the ground. A good tip to ensure sufficient watering throughout the year: simply put a rain gauge in the middle of the lawn! And water early in the morning or late at night to avoid heat loss, of course, and even illness.

Do not step on your lawn immediately

It is preferable to wait until the ground has stabilized before walking on your lawn, otherwise you may leave footprints… Wait ten days or until the first mowing. Of course, a quick and light occasional passage will not damage it either!

Don't let it grow too much

Plan the first mowing 8 to 15 days after installation. Your mower is then well sharpened, and you adjust it to cut the grass up to 35/40 mm, even up to 25 mm. The rule of thumb: do not cut more than 1/3 of the height of the strands ... And if after the first mowing you observe that the plates are badly joined or that others have dried and have therefore spread, plan sowing for garnish asking the same seeds from the producer so that there is no difference in grass color. Then, mow your lawn regularly every week minimum as regular mowing stimulates growth and increases the density and resistance of your lawn.

Your lawn, don't give it up…

Or rather, continue to maintain it. The grass is alive, so it needs to be fed a fertilizer twice a year, in spring and autumn (from February to May and from September to November for example). Adapt the fertilizer to the nature of your soil, usually an N-P-K slow-release cocktail. Also think of an anti-foaming agent once or twice a year, in February or November, and carry out selective localized weeding if necessary from time to time.
