A brick partition halfway up

A brick partition halfway up

Shades of deep hues, warm earth tones, tormented reliefs, uniform or downright smooth ... these are the characteristics of bricks. Light, easy to use and very "decorative", they will therefore be perfect for creating a partition at mid-height.

Calculation of quantities

Always make a careful layout of your partition, which, during assembly, will save you precious time. Generally the bricks are 5.8 x 22 x 10.5 cm. Calculate the total area of your partition and divide by the area of a brick. Be aware that the joint represents almost 20% of the surface seen, and that there will be a little "breakage", so always allow a little margin.

The step by step

1

Trace the location of the partition on the ground and arrange the first row of dry bricks. Then fix the width of your joints, between 0.8 and 1.2 cm ... If necessary, make a rod.

2

To obtain a straight and regular wall, make two "beacons" at each end of your wall: a large cleat held vertical by two jambs. A nylon thread stretched between the two tags allows you to check at a glance the horizontality and the perfect verticality of your work.

3

Since you offset the joints, if the first brick of the first row is whole, the first of the second row will be cut in half ... So prepare all your half bricks in advance. To cut them, use a brick chisel and a mallet.

4

Then prepare your mortar. It is an important operation, first technically for the good performance of the work, then aesthetically, for the beauty of the wall. Count 25 to 35 liters or 50 to 70 kg of mortar per square meter of standard bricks. You have the choice between a mixture of sand and lime (count 10 buckets of sand for 1 bag of hydraulic lime of 35 kg) and a ready-to-use mortar "special bricks".

5

Remove your first row of bricks and install the seat joint along the entire length of your partition. Arrange the bricks.

6

Then lay a bead of mortar on the first row of bricks, at least 2 cm from the edges, so that there is no burr. Like the baker on the baguettes, you can make vents from the end of the trowel, which will make installation easier.

7

You must make the adjustment very gently and check very regularly the horizontality and the verticality while making sure that the external face of the brick is in the plane of the facing already made.

8

If you put in just the right amount of mortar, there will be no drips and therefore no soiling. Any excess mortar must be removed immediately and carefully.

9

While mounting your partition, proceed to jointing with a joint iron. Always start with the vertical joints, which will allow you to obtain a horizontal, much more aesthetic, running joint.

Good to know

If there is dirt, or if you notice, after drying, efflorescence, clean them with water to which you will add 10% hydrochloric acid ... and rinse thoroughly. The day before, do not forget to mix the bricks well to distribute the different shades of colors and to soak them in clean water so that they do not "pump" all the water from the mortar.
